Historic Building in Brooklyn: Bronx Borough Courthouse
Built between 1905 and 1914, the Bronx Borough Courthouse served as the Supreme, Surrogate’s and County courts of the borough between 1914 and 1934. The four story structure was built in the Beaux-Arts style, out of a stone granite foundation. It is adorned with elaborate stairways, chandeliers and stained glass windows that reflect the art of the era in which they were built. The entrance is girded with two huge pillars, seated from the third to fourth stories of the building, that rises above a statue of the throne of ‘Lady Justice’.
After it was no longer used as a courthouse, the building was used by the IRT Elevated Third train system for almost six decades. As the building gained Landmark status in 1981, it has been protected from razing since then. Recently, developers have purchased the building and plan to use it for office space and as a community facility. Future improvements are planned for the building over the next few years, until it is fully utilized as an office and community facility.
