Historic Building In Nassau County: Old Nassau County Courthouse
Having its cornerstone laid by then-Governor of New York Theodore Roosevelt in 1900 and completed in 1901, the Old Nassau County Courthouse was designed by noted New York architect William Tubby. The majestic building was constructed in the Classical Revival style, the centerpiece of which is a grand rotunda capped by a white dome. The building saw additions in 1916, in 1924 and in 1928 and was in use throughout the 1940’s and 50’s, but by the time it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, the building was in a state of neglect.
Beginning in 2002 and continuing through 2008, $63.5 million in renovations were done to bring the building back to its former condition. The building is now renamed the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building and it serves as the seat of government for Nassau County.
