Historic Building in Staten Island: Caleb T. Ward Mansion
Built in 1835 on an estate of 250 acres by Caleb Tompkins Ward, the Mansion was one of the original great houses on Staten Island. Designed by renowned architect George David, the mansion was built out of stucco and brick in the Greek Revival style, with a two-story portico and huge iconic columns.
The Mansion, with its magnificent views of New York Harbor, served as the residence for Caleb Ward and his family. The land on which the Mansion sits was originally owned by Daniel D. Tompkins, Ward’s Uncle and the fourth Governor of New York and the sixth Vice-President of the United States.
The Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as being a New York City Landmark since 1978.
